In my work at Clay I recently wrote an internal policy on acceptable use of AI writing by engineers, and I’m sharing it here. It’s my hope that one day better AI tools might be able to help us think, but until then I fear that using AI to write does the exact opposite.
We Need to Talk About How We Talk About 'AI'
We share a responsibility to create and use empowering metaphors rather than misleading language, write Emily M. Bender and Nanna Inie.

The Thoughts The Civilized Keep
The hype around a new AI language generator reveals the sterility of mainstream thinking on AI today — and indeed on how we think about thinking itself.

Literature fans should welcome AI as a fellow wordsmith | Aeon Essays
Strong resistance to AI among writers is understandable. But it obscures what we share with the machines: language itself

AI for coding works so well because code has a bunch of built in self checks that allow an agent trained with reinforcement learning to find what works and what doesn’t. This will not so easily translate to eg machine design until we have way better simulations or much more “embodied AI” (robots).
Both AI and non-AI. To clarify my position, I don’t trust machine translation (based on Japanese-to-English and vice versa, but especially the former) and believe it should be reserved for personal use only and definitely not anything public-facing by a company/government/etc. that should have the budget to hire a translator.
Here’s why AI chatbots (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini etc) are unreliable for science content, and terrible as “just a starting point” for science…
i hope people keep saying pro-cancer, anti-ai things in prestige publications. i know they think it and i want as many receipts as i can get

This is something I’m likely to consider using, or, I don’t know, maybe not? * I’m neither “pro-AI” nor “anti-AI.” I’ve been blocked for being perceived as both. —Actually, I’m honestly more anti-AI than pro-AI thus far, aside from specialized models and specific use cases, but I’m willing to consider information that’s new to me
